The Stable Mat has been manufactured in Canada for many years and is used extensively in stables in North America.

The benefits of stable matting: protection, insulation, and a real saving on bedding and time - are now being more widely recognised in the U.K.

Ideal for use in stables, horsewalkers, washboxes and transport, we believe that The Stable Mat's proven record of effectiveness, durability and value make it the obvious choice.

Once you have read about The Stable Mat system, we think you will agree that rubber mats will make life a lot easier - both for your horse and you.

For a small outlay and a little installation work, you'll be delighted with the result, year after year.

Questions & Answers

Where does the urine go? Won't it get under the mats and create a smelly mess?
Good installation is the simple solution to this problem. A tightly fitted set of mats will have seams so narrow that they quickly pack and 'self-seal'. The urine stays on top - giving the bedding time to absorb it. Even if there is a small amount of seepage, you will not experience an odour problem because urine only turns to ammonia when exposed to air. The Stable Mat is non-porous, and its weight keeps it tight to the floor
.

Do I have to use a particular disinfectant?
They are not harmed by proprietary disinfectants.

Will I save time on mucking out?
Absolutely! The Stable Mat users tell us time and again that they have cut down mucking out time. A minimal bed means that you can quickly remove all wet and soiled material and top up with fresh bedding.

Are the mats slippery when wet?
The raised surface texture of The Stable Mat disperses urine and water whilst allowing a good contact between hoof and mat. At the same time it does not impede the easy movement of a fork or shovel across the stable floor. Slipping is also prevented by the ability of The Stable Mat to 'give' under the weight of the horse, so the hoof can get a purchase on the mat surface. Its this flexibility that is so beneficial in giving relief to joints and muscles, when compared to standing on concrete.

All the advantages of The Stable Mats so far are to me - will my horse benefit?
A softer, resilient floor makes for easier standing and less strain on backs, hips, and stifles. Reducing contact with concrete is good for knees and hocks and means less wear on the shoes. A shallower, drier bed helps in the prevention of thrush, and less bedding means less dust. A cleaner bed also means less ammonia in the air.

Do I have to use bedding with a Stable Mat floor?
Yes. Although not the quantity of bedding you would normally need for protection and cushioning. Savings on bedding will normally be from 50% - 80%. Your bedding is going to be primarly for absorbency, which means that shavings, chopped paper, and hemp based products, are much more effective than straw. Many users only bed a portion of the floor area and some use virtually nothing.

Why should I choose The Stable Mat?
The beauty of The Stable Mat System is:

  1. Its simple
  2. Its proven
  3. It saves time and money

More sophisticated ideas where mats are absorbent, or permit damage underneath, end up causing unpleasant odours, needing frequent removal and cleaning and cost the earth!

Fitting Instructions

A jig saw with a timber cutting blade is best. For small numbers of mats a Stanley knife is adequate.

Lay the first mat across the doorway so there is no seam in the entrance. If the door frame, or any other buttress protrudes into the stable, notch the mat to let it fit against the wall.

Lay further whole mats behind and to the side and push them tightly together. The pebbled surface is the top surface.
Remember to mark your mat in the same way that it will be laid, with the cut side to the wall and the factory edges together.

Add about half a centimetre to each measurement so that you get a tight fit. When laying the mat in place, the cut edge should just turn up the wall (see fig.4). This can be hammered down to tighten the seam.
